Panic attacks can feel like a whirlwind of emotions and physical sensations that take over your body and mind. If you've ever experienced one, you know how terrifying and overwhelming it can be. Here's what a panic attack might look like and how you might relate to it:
The Physical Experience
Imagine you’re going about your day, and suddenly, out of nowhere, you feel a wave of intense fear or discomfort. Your heart starts racing, pounding so hard that you can feel it in your chest. You might notice your breathing becoming shallow, as if you can’t get enough air, which makes you feel like you’re suffocating. Your body might start to shake uncontrollably, and sweat begins to pour down your face, even if you’re not hot.
Your chest might feel tight, or you could experience sharp pain that makes you wonder if you’re having a heart attack. You feel dizzy, lightheaded, or like you’re about to faint. Every muscle in your body tenses up, and you might feel disconnected from reality, like you’re outside of your own body. It’s a full-body experience that leaves you feeling completely overwhelmed.
The Emotional Toll
But it’s not just the physical symptoms that make panic attacks so frightening—it’s the emotional toll as well. When a panic attack strikes, it often comes with an intense fear that something terrible is about to happen. You might think you’re losing control, going crazy, or even dying. These thoughts can spiral, feeding the panic and making it even harder to calm down.
After the attack passes, you might feel exhausted, drained, and worried. You might start to become worried about having additional panic attacks and find it hard to go back to places where you have had panic attacks before.
The first step in therapy is to make sense of these panic attacks and work on finding ways to minimize the physical discomfort that comes with these attacks. we will establish ways ot minimize the discomfort and also make sense of they why behind the panic attack.
After we have a plan to deal with the panic attacks, we will work on treating the underlying anxiety of the panic attacks and use the traditional type of CBT that I use for generalized anxiety disorder.
